On Thursday, Pittsburgh was named as one of the 20 finalists to land Amazon’s HQ2. In recent decades, the city has reinvented itself, emerging from what was once a smog-filled steel mill town. Pittsburgh’s tech sector grew by 24% from 2011 to 2016 and major tech companies like Google, Facebook, and Uber already have large presences in the city.
Amazon itself already has a corporate office there. Pittsburgh also has a major university system that can help fill some of the 50,000 jobs the Amazon headquarters plans on creating. It’s also one of the least expensive cities on the list of options Amazon is considering.
